Special Issues

Design of the 2011 Hollywood Issue. Entitled, “A Touch of Evil,” the theme of villainy
in film permeated both the content, the imagery and the typography for
both the print and digital experience. Completed with the help of Rami Moghadam,
Caleb Bennett and Drea Zlanabitnig, and under the art direction of Design
Director, Arem Duplessis, and Art Director, Gail Bichler. The photographic portfolio
and accompanying videos were taken by Alex Prager, and the illustrations
which accompanied A.O. Scott’s essay were drawn by Frank Stockton. The digital iteration was
a collaboration with John Niedermeyer and Meghan Louttit.










Design and management of The 9th Annual Year in Ideas Issue. The process involved
envisioning the cover concept, commissioning and art directing all printed illustrations and online
animations and designing a layout that could translate easily from the
printed magazine to a unique web experience. Completed with the help of Leo Jung, Leslie Kwok,
Nancy Harris Rouemy and Robert Vargas, and under the art direction of Design
Director, Arem Duplessis, and Art Director, Gail Bichler.

Design and management of the 2010 The Lives They Lived Issue. The last issue of the year,
it celebrated the lives of those who have passed since 2009. Custom monograms
were commissioned from Mother Design for each profile and a new font and grid system were introduced.
Completed with the help of Leo Jung and Erika Lee, and under the
art direction of Design Director, Arem Duplessis, and Art Director, Gail Bichler.








Design and management of the 2010 Education Issue, which focused on the
relationship between education and technology. The process involved developing a custom
aesthetic for the entire issue, including a set of custom patterns
associated with each feature story and the introduction of a new font. Completed with the help
of Leo Jung, Caleb Bennett and Sara Cwynar, and under the art
direction of Design Director, Arem Duplesis, and Art Director, Gail Bichler.
